Bastien Pourtout, né en 1982, est diplômé d’un Master en Histoire économique et sociale à Paris X (2012) et d’un Master en Photographie et Art contemporain à Paris VIII (2019). Edouard Taufenbach, né en 1988 est diplômé d’un Master en Arts et Médias numériques à Paris I (2014).
Ils travaillent ensemble depuis Spéculaire (2018-2019) autour de la collection de photographies vernaculaires de Sébastien Lifshitz. Les collages réalisés sont présentés à la galerie Binôme, à Paris Photo la même année, et l’année suivante à Rome, à Londres, à Mexico et à New York, au festival de Photographie d'Athènes, ainsi qu'à la Villa Noailles. Ils publient une monographie sur ce projet avec les Éditions L’Artiere. Puis ils présentent La méthode (2020) autour des structures des Hommages au carré de Josef Albers.
En 2020 Ils sont lauréats du Prix Swiss Life à 4 mains pour le projet Le bleu du ciel, sur le vol de l’hirondelle. Ils partent en résidence à la villa Médicis pour réaliser ce travail et décident à leur retour de devenir un duo artistique. Ce projet est exposé au Musée de la piscine à Roubaix, au salon photographique Approche, dans divers galeries et à Arles pour Les rencontres de la photographie. Ils réalisent une seconde publication avec les éditions Filigranes.
Au printemps 2022, ils exposent avec le galeriste Pierre Passebon un travail autour de sa collection de photographies de Marlène Dietrich dont un diptyque a été présenté à la cinémathèque sous la curation de Matthieu Orléan pour l’exposition Cinemode par Jean-Paul Gaultier. Ils sont également lauréats du programme de recherche IMANÉO (CNRS-INHA) et développent une œuvre numérique sur le Marché central de Tunis.
Leur pratique en duo se définit comme une méthode faite de protocoles et de jeux. Par différents appareils de prise de vue (réflex numérique, téléphone portable ou Rolleiflex), ils produisent des photographies à agencer, à associer, à faire circuler comme des messages de l’un pour l’autre — tout un langage visuel. Toujours en train de se faire, les images ne sont pas conçues à priori, elles s’inventent et se construisent dans l’échange.
Depuis une résidence à la Villa Médicis en 2020 où ils ont construit une cartographie photographique des jardins, la représentation de l’espace est au cœur de leur pratique artistique. La recherche porte avant tout sur les structures et les principes d’organisation, sur ce qui détermine le fonctionnement et la nature d’un lieu. A la manière d’un jeu perecquien, leur démarche est systématique mais les réponses sont toujours spécifiques. Par le dessin, la photographie et par des assemblages, ils cherchent à développer de nouveaux protocoles et de nouveaux outils d’exploration.
Ils travaillent avec la Galerie C à Paris et à Neuchâtel et avec la galerie Almanaque fotográfica à Mexico. Leurs travaux ont fait l’objet de nombreuses parutions presses telles que Art Press (28 février 2022), Le Monde (9 juillet 2021), Libération (7 mai 2021), Télérama (6 février 2021) ou The New York Times (9 novembre 2018).

They have been working together since Spéculaire (2018-2019) around Sebastien Lifshitz's collection of vernacular photographs. The collages made are presented at the Binôme gallery, at Paris Photo the same year, and the following year in Rome, London, Mexico City and New York, at the Athens Photography Festival, as well as at the Villa Noailles. They published a monograph on this project with Éditions L'Artiere. Then they present La méthode (2020) around the structures of the tributes to the Josef Albers' square.
In 2020 they won the Swiss Life 4 Hands Prize for the project Le bleu du ciel, about the flight of the swallow. They went on a residency at the Villa Medici to realize this work and decided upon their return to become an artistic duo. This project is exhibited at the Museum of the swimming pool in Roubaix, at the photographic exhibition "Approche", in various galleries and in Arles for "Les rencontres de la photographie". They realize a second publication with the editions Filigranes.
In the spring of 2022, they exhibited with the gallery owner Pierre Passebon a work based on his collection of photographs of Marlene Dietrich, a diptych of which was presented at the Cinémathèque under the curation of Matthieu Orléan for the exhibition Cinemode by Jean-Paul Gaultier. Their duo practice is defined as a method made of protocols and games. Using different cameras (digital reflex, cell phone or Rolleiflex), they produce photographs to be arranged, associated, and circulated as messages from one to the other - a whole visual language. Always in the process of being made, the images are not conceived a priori, they are invented and constructed in the exchange.
Since a residency at the Villa Medici in 2020 where they built a photographic cartography of the gardens, the representation of space is at the heart of their artistic practice. Their research focuses on structures and principles of organization, on what determines the functioning and nature of a place. Like a Perectian game, their approach is systematic but the answers are always specific. Through drawing, photography and assemblages, they seek to develop new protocols and new tools of exploration.
They work with Galerie C in Paris and Neuchâtel and with the Almanaque fotográfica gallery in Mexico. Their work has been featured in numerous press publications such as Art Press (February 28, 2022), Le Monde (July 9, 2021), Libération (May 7, 2021), Télérama (February 6, 2021) or The New York Times (November 9, 2018).
