Né·e·s en 1964, Alpha et Christopher Mason sont un duo d’artistes connu sous le pseudonyme de Hipkiss. Originaires du Royaume-Uni, iels vivent et travaillent désormais en France. Réuni·e·s au début des années 1980, iels débutent alors un projet artistique, qui deviendra celui de toute une vie.
De l’intime collaboration entre les deux artistes naissent des paysages construits, au sein desquels évoluent d’étranges insectes au centre d’un environnement industriel et inspiré de l’architecture. Dans sa démarche artistique, le duo cherche à illustrer via le langage symbolique fictionnel présent au sein de ces paysages sociaux et politiques d’environnements urbains, des thèmes issus du monde de la nature en relation avec l’expérience humaine. Ainsi l’œuvre constitue une forme de dialogue continu évoluant au fil du temps entre les deux artistes et le monde contemporain dans lequel iels vivent. De plus, des fragments de textes, des mots choisis de manière aléatoire se glissent dans les dessins minutieux et aux interprétations multiples de Hipkiss, qui sur un fond de légèreté laissent entrevoir des messages politiques.
Les dessins à la mine de plomb et à l’encre deviennent dans leur richesse métaphorique de véritables jardins visionnaires. À l’importance accordée au détail s’ajoute la répétition esthétique des motifs et des figures. Ce que l’on retrouve dans la nature qui nous entoure, la plupart des éléments naturels étant constitués d’une infinité d’éléments répétés.
En 2018, le Drawing Center à New York leur consacre une exposition personnelle intitulée « Bulwark ». Cette dernière exposition marque un tournant dans leur projet en cours, « Towers », dont la composition s’éloigne désormais de l’environnement industriel caractéristique des oeuvres datant de 2015-2016.
Actif depuis les années 1990, le duo d’artistes est notamment représenté dans diverses collections: FRAC Picardie, FRAC Midi-Pyrénées, The Metropolitan Museum of Art, Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen, John Michael Kohler Art Center, Cindy Sherman, Rudolf Zwirner, Antoine de Galbert, The Kupferstichkabinett and The Whitworth.
Lauréat·e·s à trois reprise de la bourse Pollock-Krasner, leurs oeuvres ont été exposées à l’internationale au sein des institutions suivantes: Tate Britain, Whitechapel, David Zwirner, The Drawing Center, La Maison Rouge, New Museum, The Irish Museum of Modern Art, La Caixa and The Aldrich Museum of Contemporary Art.

Hipkiss is the joint pseudonym of Alpha and Christopher Mason (both born in 1964 in the UK), who have been working together since their first meeting in the early 1980s. British by birth, they have lived in France since 2001 and consider themselves Anglo-French.
The two artists left the English countryside to stay in the south of France. The intimate collaboration of the two artists results in constructed landscapes within which there is strange insects at the centre of an environment that is very industrial. Fragments of texts, words chosen at hazard, slip into the meticulous drawings of Hipkiss, which on a superficial backdrop reveal political messages.
In 2018, the solo exhibition, ‘Bulwark’, at The Drawing Center, New York, marked a new stage in their ongoing Towers project. Moving on from the more industrial compositions of 2015-16, they created an installation of thirteen towering plants – mostly toxic or prickly species – envisaged by the artists as a small battalion of ‘Liberties’.
The drawings of Hipkiss form notably a part of the collection of Cindy Sherman and Antoine de Galbert and, in addition, that of the Boijmans Van Beuningen museum (The Netherlands). Hipkiss is represented in the collections of FRAC Picardie, FRAC Midi-Pyrénées, The Metropolitan Museum of Art, Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen, John Michael Kohler Art Center, Cindy Sherman, Rudolf Zwirner, Antoine de Galbert, The Kupferstichkabinett and The Whitworth, among others.
