Né en 1990 à Lille, Massao Mascaro vit et travaille à Bruxelles. Après avoir obtenu un Bachelor en photographie à l’école d’art Le 75 à Bruxelles, il poursuit sa formation photographique à Madrid à la Blank Paper Escuela. Depuis 2019, il enseigne dans le département de photographie à l’Académie des Beaux-Arts de Bruxelles.
Entremêlant autobiographie, topographie et politique, Massao Mascaro aborde son sujet dans une forme de poésie nouvelle. Son travail gravite souvent autour des territoires où il aime errer et ses photographies en noir et blanc, toujours délicates et quelque peu discrètes, sont en même temps capable de métaphores puissantes. Il explore notamment la manière dont les humains interagissent avec l’espace - géographique et culturel - qu’ils habitent.
Dans cette perspective, il crée, en collaboration avec la Fondation A Stichting, la série « Sub Sole » (du latin, « sous le soleil »). Cet ensemble de photographies réalisées entre 2017 et 2020, dans la région de la mer Méditerranée, suit l'itinéraire mythologique du voyage d'Ulysse : Ceuta, Naples, Athènes, Palerme, Istanbul, Tunis et Lampedusa. Carrefour des cultures, berceau des mythes fondateurs, la Méditerranée est, aujourd'hui plus que jamais, marquée par les migrations, les exils et les déplacements. Au cours de sept voyages et de nombreuses rencontres fortuites, Massao Mascaro part à la recherche des jeunes qui habitent et traversent cette région. Le livre « Sub Sole » est paru aux éditions Chose Commune en 2021.
Massao Mascaro a été récompensé par différentes distinctions et résidences en Europe. Il a reçu le prix « Bozar Monography Series Award », a été sélectionné par le « .Tiff, Antwerpen Fotomumseum FOMU », finaliste pour le « Louis Roederer Discovery Award » aux Rencontres de la Photographie Arles, et a récemment effectué une résidence « H – The Notion of Humanist Photography » à la Kaunas Photography Gallery en Lituanie.
Il investit depuis plusieurs années la scène contemporaine dans des expositions personnelles et collectives aussi bien en Belgique qu’à l’international, telles que : « Speaking in Tongues », Le Botanique, Bruxelles (2015) et BIP biennale de l’image possible, Liège (2016) ; « Abitare il deserto », Museo San Rocco, Fusignano (2016) ; « Jardin », Bozar Centre for Fine Arts, Bruxelles(2017) ; « .Tiff », FOMU Antwerpen Fotomuseum (2018) ; « Louis Roederer Discovery Award », Les Rencontres de la Photographie Arles (2021) ; « Sub Sole », Fondation A Stichting, Bruxelles ; « Prix Photoforum Pasquart », Photoforum Pasquart, Bienne (2022-2023).

Born in 1990 in Lille, Massao Mascaro currently lives and works in Brussels. After graduating from a Bachelor's degree in photography at the art school Le 75 in Brussels, he continued his photographic studies in Madrid at the Blank Paper Escuela. Since 2019, he teaches in the photography department at the Academy of Fine Arts in Brussels.
Intertwining autobiography, topography and politics, Massao Mascaro approaches his subject in a novel form of poetry. His work often revolves around the territories where he likes to wander and his black and white photographs, always delicate and somewhat understated, are at the same time capable of powerful metaphors. In particular, he explores the way humans interact with the space - geographical and cultural - they inhabit.
In this perspective, he creates, in collaboration with the Foundation A Stichting, the series « Sub Sole » (from Latin, « beneath the sun »). This ensemble of photographs made between 2017 and 2020, in the region of the Mediterranean Sea, follows the mythological itinerary of Ulysses' journey: Ceuta, Naples, Athens, Palermo, Istanbul, Tunis and Lampedusa. Crossroads of cultures, cradle of founding myths, the Mediterranean is, today more than ever, marked by migrations, exiles and displacements. In the course of seven journeys and numerous chance encounters, Massao Mascaro goes in search of the young people who inhabit and traverse this region. The book « Sub Sole » was published by Chose Commune in 2021.
Massao Mascaro was awarded various distinctions and residencies in Europe. He received the Bozar Monography Series Award, was selected by the .Tiff, Antwerpen Fotomumseum FOMU, was a finalist for the Louis Roederer Discovery Award at the Rencontres de la Photographie Arles, and recently completed a residency "H - The Notion of Humanist Photography" at the Kaunas Photography Gallery in Lithuania.
